Understanding running pace.
Pace is expressed in minutes per kilometre (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile). Unlike speed in km/h, pace maps directly onto a race — it tells you the time to cover each split.
To convert pace to speed, divide 60 by your min/km. A 5:00/km pace is 12.0 km/h. Every estimate here assumes an even effort held across the full distance — real races drift with terrain, fatigue and tactics, so treat the splits as a target band, not a promise.
Common questions.
Pace is calculated by dividing your running time by the distance covered. For example, if you run 10 km in 50 minutes, your pace is 5:00/km.
To finish a marathon (42.195 km) in 4 hours, you need to maintain a pace of 5:41/km, or about 10.5 km/h.
To convert pace to speed: divide 60 by the pace in minutes. For example, 5:00/km = 60/5 = 12 km/h.
